One of the more difficult aspects of getting into building circuits is parts sourcing: the process of finding the right parts locally or online to build your project. For seasoned hacker pros, this process is not terribly difficult, but for everyone else, getting the right part can be difficult. Not because they aren't available, but because there are so many variations and varieties it can be hard to actually order the correct part.

One of the key features of the beavis box is the Parts Stash: a well-thought-out collection of the most important parts you'll need to build great stuff.

Oh, sweet semiconductors!

Here's a list of what's in the standard parts stash (if you don't know what these are, don't worry: they're all explained in the Hacker's Guide to the Beavis Board)

  • Resistors: 5% tolerance 1/4 watt metal film parts. Values from 10 ohms to 1M ohm.

  • Ceramic capacitors: A bunch of the most common values: 10pf to 470pf.

  • Film capacitors: Low-voltage poly film parts. Values from 1nf to 220nf.

  • Electrolytic capacitors: 16 volt parts. Values from 1uf to 220uf.

  • Diodes: A great selection of diodes for clipping and other audio uses. Values: 1N914, 1N4148, 1N34, and Zener.

  • Transistors: A collection of bipolar silicon, JFET and MOSFET parts. Types: 2N2222A, 2N3904, 2N3906, 2N4401, 2N5088, BC109, MPSA18, 2N5457, 2N45458, 2N7000, BS170, J201, and MPF102

  • Integrated Circuits: some of the more common (and some fun obscure parts too). Types:  741, JRC4558, LM386N3, LM567, LM833, NE5532, RC4558P, TL071, TL072, TS555CN, CD4049UBE, LM556, 40106, and JRC386

  • Potentiometers: Alpha 16mm pots. Values: B1K, B10K, B50K, B100K, B500K, B1M, A25K, A100K, and A250K.

  • Breadboard jumper wires: a standard collection of colored solid-core jumper wires.

  • Some other fun stuff thrown in for you to experiment with.

Note: the exact make-up of the parts stash changes over time as I find interesting new parts and things that make good tonal differences for the projects.
